Book hop and swap cards
The secret is out!!
Scrap Quilt Secrets that is.
This is the super new book by Diane Knott of Butterfly Threads Quilting. As the name suggests it's a collection of clever quilt patterns plus tips and ideas for using up those ever growing piles of scraps that most of us have lurking in our sewing rooms.
I wont say too much because I'll be back next week for my turn on the blog hop. In the mean time you can follow along the Scrap Quilt Secrets trail by visiting all these great blogs. You'll also have a chance to win a copy of of the book each day.

Now for a bit of Blue Mountain Daisy fun.
I hope you like the way you never quite know what you'll find on my blog.
Sometimes its sewing related, sometimes flowers, maybe a story or poem...
Today its swap cards.
I have no idea what happened to my original collection but a few years ago I saw some swap cards and in a wave of nostalgia started a little collection again. I bought some mixed collections and soon had a good range of all sorts of things.
Cool Cowboys
Flocks of birds
Merry couples
Circus fun
Retro advertising
geometric and patterns
And even a pair that shows a quilt.
Lots of serious regal expressions on the queens.
A few months ago I came across my box of swap cards and couldn't help thinking it's a shame that I keep them hidden in a drawer. Wouldn't it be much better if they were out where they could be seen.
A quick rummage in my kitchen cupboards produced the perfect rectangle plate. Now the cards sit on a coffee table where we can flip through when we feel like it. I know Mr Daisy looks through them too because the top card has often changed.
For everyone that is kind enough to leave a comment on this post I'll randomly pick out a card especially for them and email a picture of it. A small way of saying thank you for encouraging me with your wonderful words. Won't it be fun to see which card turns up for you.
(If you don't get a reply from me it's because you're a no reply commenter. If you're not sure you can put your email address in the comment).

Trading Cards! My favorite activity when I was young. I had a shoebox full of them, all in order by subject.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post Rachael! I often wonder where my swap cards went? I still have my Barbie doll, her clothes and my old toy sewing machine, but no swap cards! You have managed to collect some beauties there! Love the cowboys and the folk art especially!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing your scrappy quilt for the blog hop too!
I am not familiar with swap cards, but your collection was so much fun to see. Love the bears and business logos.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun collection. Funnily enough, I've never come across swap cards. Not something we did as kids and not something I've come across in our very many years of collecting all sorts of "stuff". You've done well to amass so many. Definitely worth having out where they can be enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteYou have a very interesting collection....my son collected baseball and football cards. It's neat that girls in your country do that...I didn't know any girls here who did. I especially like your cowboy cards !
ReplyDeleteOH My GOSH I love your collection of cards! wow what a fun life long hobby.
ReplyDeleteI knew a woman in Illinois who had a collection.
Looking forward to your post on Diane's Book
That is exactly why I love your blog because IT IS so random in content.
ReplyDeleteA delightful surprise to see your cards, I never collected ......but am intrigued now!
These cards are so adorable, I love that blue ballerina! What a fun collection you have and it doesn't take up much room!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for Diane and her new book, it's great!
Why have I never seen swap cards until now? I love them!
ReplyDeleteWow -- I wish I'd known about swap cards when I was a girl -- wouldn't that have been fun! You have a great collection there -- I love that cute card with the Three Bears. Very Fun!!!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting - I had never seen those before.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds fun.... please choose a card ....
ReplyDeleteDoes it tell my future ;-)
You just gave me a bit of education today. I had not heard of this term, Swap Cards, and had to find out what they were. I have lots of playing cards, full decks, from places I visited, or picked up because they were pretty. We always played cards when we were younger, so there were always different decks
ReplyDeletea lot of times you got the decks for free, as they advertised a product or company. How interesting. Now I will have to look at this all differently.
Yours are wonderful. No wonder you collected them. Thank you for sharing.
Looks like a fun collection you've started! I would have been all about the animal cards as a kid. Probably today too, but those geometric cards look inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen swap cards--guess I must have been living under a rock or something! I have things that I used to collect and wonder what ever happened to them--hopefully someone has come across them, rescued them and is enjoying them like these cards! I think Diane's book looks great---looking forward to your day on the hop.
ReplyDeleteBeats the heck out of Baseball cards! And I really like the way you decided to show them off and play with them on the table! Great idea!
ReplyDeletethank you for giving me the learning lesson of the day. I have never heard of these cards, do you know who made them and if they still exist today? would be fun to research them more. If I ever run into such items I will know where to send them.
ReplyDeleteHi Rachael. I live in an underground house built back in 1980. The colors are 80's inside as well. The landlord recently upgraded appliances and ruined the whole theme. Darn him. Anyway, I have a bunch of magazine ads I have saved over the years. I copied them onto cardstock and put them up in frames in the living room and kitchen. I think they go great with the old 1980 house. Some of them are hilarious. I think you would enjoy them. Tell Mr. Daisy Hello! Cindy

I had a whole tin of swap cards. I adored some of them, dunno what became of them.
ReplyDeleteI remember having some like the pink, blues and green geometric pattern one - if we had been good, Mum would let us choose more swap cards. We used to be able to buy them new!
I am sure we had one of the flying ducks and also the blue ballerina - there was a series of the ballerina ones.
Oh my, you have taken me back to primary school. I seem to remember that swap cards with blank backs were higher kudos as it meant that you bought then in a toy shop but the playing card ones always had more beautiful pictures on them.

ReplyDeleteThe vintage images remind me of learning to read with Dick and Jane. You are a continual source of amusement and inspiration.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I've not heard of these cards before your post. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with these cards. Are there pictures on both sides or is there a saying on the other side? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSwap Cards........are they playing cards and you swap them or are they blank on the other side. I hadn't heard of them either but growing up in northern NH there were a LOT of things i hadn't heard of :) Still catching up! Are they an AU thing? I did see the Scottish piper right away! Have fun with them.
ReplyDeleteOh Lordy, do I remember these things! Along with elastics and knuckle bones. You would rush out at playtime, pull out your cards and approach others with cards, "do you want to swap?" Then you exchanged the decks, shuffled through them turning over the ones you wanted. Then got your cards back and the negotiations were on!
ReplyDeleteI could have been a millionaire if I translated those skills to business, I started with a friends cast off cards and worked my way to a decent little pile in the end. Alas though I must have tossed them aside at some stage, I would be tickled pink to see what card turns up in the email.
And your blog is as ever a delightful place to come and chat.
Goodness, what a great selection of cards you have! Great that you have kept them all these years too! And look forward to hearing more about the scrappy quilt book!
ReplyDeleteWhat a super fun collection. I missed out when I was growing up, but I'm sure I collected other things. So glad you found your swap cards and your pink ukulele! (You must have a family that likes to hold on to treasures in an attic or basement). The cards really have some great retro pictures. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm too old for swap cards, we used to swap pictures when I was at primary school, swap cards would have been much better. Love the geometric ones, I can see a quilt or two in them, and that quilt with the birds perched on top is amazing, I wonder if there is actually two more cards for the bottom part of the quilt, I guess we'll never know :)
ReplyDeleteHi my lovely friend, boy did you bring back some memories,i loved my swap cards and i would swap them with friends at school and every week when my mum did her groceries she would bring me back home a couple of new cards,oh the fun i had with them, thankyou for the memories Rachael xx

ReplyDeleteI do remember the fun of collecting swap cards. So many delightful pictures. Love the way you have them out on display.
Your blog always has something interesting going on.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great variety of swap cards, they are pretty, I'm glad you have them displayed as it would be a shame for them to be stored away in a cupboard.
Your blog is just so beautiful and colourful, with all fun interesting stuff. I love getting your posts.I have known you for 25 years and I had NO idea about your card collection, so cool, I love it. Choose a really fun one for me. Also I didnt know you had a pink ukulele, way cool xxxxxx
ReplyDeleteAhi RAchael....love the randomness of your blog! Oh what cool cards especially those Cool COWBOYS! Love the Kng ring-ins lol!
ReplyDeleteI am intrigued by the book -- especially if you have a project in it.
ReplyDeleteAnd, intrigued by swap cards -- I don't know about them, but they look charming. So bright & colorful!
I've never heard of this style of swap cards, but I'm in love already! I wish I had a stack of them to look through. I'll have to go to some flea markets or keep my eyes open when I go to the thrift store. Maybe I'll get lucky!
ReplyDeleteWhy have I never heard of swap cards! Oh what delight. Those 3 bears are a delight!!! What fun it always is to come visit you, Rachel. Love the look of that quilt book, too!
ReplyDeleteYour swap cards are great! I don't know what happened to my original collection either - and I remember some fabulous ones; Holly Hobby type girls, girls with reeeeeally big eyes, horses (I was horse mad!).....sigh! Happy memories.
ReplyDeleteWow...I have my grandmother's swap cards from Sweden from 1910
ReplyDeleteThese are so wonderful. Wishing you and your family every happiness at Eastertime.
ReplyDeleteThere is no end to your creativity! I've never even heard of swap cards. The birds with the quilt is such a pretty set!
ReplyDeleteI am eager to see what you make from the scrap book and what you think of it. I bought Sujata Shah's book after you posted about it and it's been the best quilt book I've ever bought. I've made 4 quilts from it and am working on a fifth. So thanks for the book reviews:)!!!!
Yes! I used to collect trading cards. I don't remember where we got them - it was a looooong time ago!
ReplyDeleteCollecting trading cards looks like a great hobby! I love the ones with the sweet birds and quilts :-) Who knew that there was such a variety? Thanks for mentioning the scrap book.
ReplyDeleteOh your creativity combined with your generosity make your blog so much fun to visit! I love the idea of these swap cards, I can't believe I never knew about them. Thanks for sharing them, they really are interesting, and I wonder why all the kings and queens look so unhappy? LOL
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of swap cards either. Must not have been in the USA? Are they all playing cards on the other side? You have a wonderful collection! What fun they are - I love all the different images you're showing. I know some people here collect old post cards or photos.
ReplyDeleteWaiting to hear what you have to say about Diane's book. It looks like a good one!
Do all the trading cards have playing cards on the other side or are these two different collections? I'm a bit confused.
ReplyDeleteI remember baseball and hockey trading cards about player that my brother collected. I also think there were some you got with gum.
Your collection is lovely.
Hope you had a good Easter weekend!
Oh my, I am sooooooo happy that I bumped into your site! When I lived in Panama I was in the 5th grade and was introduced to trading cards and just loved the hobby. To this day, every time I am coaxed into playing a card game I think of the varied trades of 'pairs' and 'rare' cards that went on during recess and lunch time. It is one of my fondest memories of living in the Canal Zone.
ReplyDeleteI loved the interesting story about the trading cards. I don't remember seeing them when I was young.

What a fun collection. Never heard of this. Where can you get them. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see what card I get.
ReplyDeleteWell, these are just too fun! Maybe they're the precurser to ATCs and now rolodex scrap cards. How happy that you still have them....
ReplyDeleteLove the trading cards - super cool! Wish they were still a thing! Love the tipsy tac toe quilt - love black and white combinations!! very nice!! mumbird3atgmaildotcom
ReplyDeleteRazamatazz is my favorite (even if I can't spell it). amanda.echler(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteOh I have swap card envy! You should mount and frame them on the walls. Razzamatazz is my fave quilt closely followed by the black and white one:)
ReplyDeleteHello Mrs. Daisy: I've never heard of swap cards before, but some of the art on them is so fun!! And great quilt inspiration too!! What a fun share with us!! Have a great week in your lovely Australia!! :-) Hugs, H
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me a comment. Your kind words encourage me to keep sharing my work and stories.
