Up Up and Away
A vintage aircraft joy flight.
The plane was a 1930's Tiger Moth.
It didn't take long for him to be securely strapped in and I was reassured by his big smile and enthusiastic thumbs up.
After just a couple of turns of the propeller
the engine kicked over, and they were off down the runway...
and soon making their way across the clear blue skies!
With my feet firmly on the ground I found a cool spot under a gum tree and pulled out the latest edition of Simply Moderne. It's the 4th edition and I swear each issue seems more action packed and colourful than the last.
How perfect that the cover quilt looks like a birds eye view, as though we're flying over a pretty town. Round the Garden was designed by Wendy Williams of Flying Fish Kits. I predict it will be a popular pattern and we'll soon be seeing versions of it popping up every where.
As I turned the pages, the magazine took me flying to Houston with a great showcase of quilts.
A few more pages and it had me flying back in time to read about Bill Volckening's collection of quilts from the 70's.
I navigated my way through quilter profiles and lots of projects from quilters all around the world.
Including a striking one called Flying to the Stars by Sydney quilter Liesel Moult
I was so absorbed in the glossy pages of Simply Moderne that before I knew it the time had flown by and it was time to see Mr Daisy's plane land. It was a smooth touch down. He hasn't stopped talking enthusiastically about all the looping and spiralling acrobatics and the breathtaking views he had seen.
And even though it all sounded thrilling and wonderful I thoroughly enjoyed my slice of quiet time under a tree reading my favourite magazine.
Are you wondering about the pretty toile from the first photo?
It's been ages since I bought fabric. I've been enjoying using up my stash but I recently found myself in a quilt shop and bought this fun selection of fabrics. I didn't choose them for any projects in mind but I know they're destined to be just the right fabric at the right time.
One day I'll get a flash of an idea and I'll reach for this toile and say...
"Up Up and Away!
with pretty fabrics I will play".

Lovely fabrics to add to your stash. I would have been on the ground with you. Small airplanes are not for me!:)
ReplyDeleteWendy's cover quilt is gorgeous, isn't it? I have resisted buying this copy....up until now! Were you tempted to join your intrepid flyer for few "loop the loops"?!
ReplyDeleteGrande Mr Daisy!
Roger
What a beautiful day for a fly in the sky (though I personally prefer to have a bit more plane around me when flying!!). Round the Garden is stunning!! Love your fabrics.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun story of your day at the airport. I would be staying on the ground too--those little planes terrify me! I know those fabrics will become something wonderful!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun!! I bet he was incredibly jazzed to be able to fulfill a dream and fly in that plane :-) It sounds like you had a very relaxing morning waiting for him!
ReplyDeleteHow fun..I enjoyed the trips too...all of them.
ReplyDeleteWhen I started reading I thought Mr Daisy was going to do a tandem parachute jump, a flight in a vintage aircraft is so much better. Love your selection of fabrics, I buy fabrics the same way, no particular project in mind, I just like them.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome experience for Mr. daisy especially in a vintage plane. Love the new fabrics. It's nice to add a bit of newness to your collection. The toile is lovely. I know you'll have fun with that.
ReplyDeleteDear Mr Dashing Daisy, such Derring Do! Did the young man really complete the acrobatic moves?
ReplyDeleteThank you for flicking through the magazine and sharing it with us. I am a shocker for perusing magazines, just to see it there are worth buying that month, to the point where the newsagent yells out, " ya going to buy or what, we are not a library ya know" to which I turn on my heel, toss back my golden locks, give a withering look and sashay out of the shop saying, " all good, see you next week Tom!"
( actually my locks are more salt and pepper now and sashaying makes my hips twinge a little but the withering look is as potent as ever, and my newsagent is a lovely chatty man whose name I changed for creative purposes because he would never yell.....but I am guilty of the long flick through)
Looks like I'm off to Joann again to check out what mags are on the shelves there - there's no newsagents in the US! The closest I've seen is in some big cities there's shacks no bigger than a dog box that sell newspapers and some mags.
ReplyDeleteThe plane looks like fun, though I'm not sure I would've done it either. My one and only chopper flight though was excellent!
Wow a flight in a tiger moth. I'm sure Mr D has a grin from ear to ear everytime he thinks about his adventure. Like being able to subersize one of his rc planes.
ReplyDeleteYour time under a shady tree with quilty inspration catered for you as well. All round good outing.
What a fantastic adventure!!
ReplyDeleteI'm limiting my fabric purchasing this year too. But occasionally I see a "gap" and buy some to fill it. The rule though is that I have to see with it within the month.
Oooh he is brave! Such a flimsy little plane. (And you are brave letting him go....) Lovely fabrics you've bought.
ReplyDeleteI am SO JEALOUS of Mr. Daisy - I want to go up too!!!! I love to fly, especially when not ensconced in a metal tube. Helicopters are my fave, but this would take the cake. I love that quilt on the cover, going off to have a look at the pattern....love all your new fabrics!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you both had a delightful day. How appropriate that the cover quilt is like an aerial view. It reminds me of the day on our honeymoon in Tassie that Mick went for a jet boat ride on the upper Derwent River and I sat under a tree and enjoyed reading a new vintage book I had found in an op shop.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful time for MR D! How great to be able to enjoy such a fun activity on a beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteThank you also for sharing that wonderful magazine.
I am sure inspiration will hit for your fabric - probably at the oddest time. Good luck!
The plane ride looks scary to me, though I am sure he had a wonderful time, my husband would love to do it too!
ReplyDeleteI really like that magazine a lot and I agree that pattern is very popular.
I know you will do something amazing with the fabrics!
I'm glad Mr Daisy enjoyed the flight, but I would have been with you sitting under the gum tree! Cute fabrics.
ReplyDeleteMr. Daisy's got GUTS and glad he had such a good time! You got guts too, into a fiber shop and only how many fabrics ????????? haha
ReplyDeleteActually, that plane was quite interesting......
I would have loved to be up in the air but I also understand the need to read in the shade
ReplyDeleteWhat fun experience for the hubby. One day I hope to find a copy of that magazine, that issue looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteMy tummy lurched at the sight of that plane. I think the shade and "Simply Moderne"was the way to go although Mr. Daisy looks so happy like a little boy at Christmas. Love your fabric choices. That toile is to die for:) Who made it?
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post and fun fabric. It led me to clicking on another post, then another, then I may have read most of your 2013 posts. So thanks for a fun morning of inspiration! I just love you creativity and style.
ReplyDeleteFun to read this post. Handsome Mr. Daisy. And I have that issue as well--really inspirational. :)
ReplyDeleteOooh, such pretty fabrics -- and a fun post too. Glad hubby made it back on terra firma safely -- those acrobatics scare me LOL!
ReplyDeleteSmall planes terrify me but that does look very cool! I loved this edition too, it's a great magazine. Fun mix of fabrics and look forward to seeing when they pop up :)
ReplyDeleteHow much fun for Mr. Daisy! And looks like you had fun, too, under the tree with a new magazine. (It is so hard to find! I'm still looking for that issue.)
ReplyDeleteSo fun, a nice day for you both! I subscribed to the magazine and am so glad I did. You're right, we'll probably see that cover quilt a lot the next year, but I won't mind because it's so pretty!
ReplyDeleteYou manage to make me smile every time :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd I think you had the better time, safe on the ground :-))
I just love when people fulfill life dreams and goals. What a fun fun thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI have my magazine too and need to spend some time with it!
What a lovely toile' and other new fabrics.
I think I would be the same as you RAchael...sitting under a tree reading! I know my DH would go up,in one of those lol
ReplyDeleteI'm so afraid of height! Once when we went for a walk in the mountains and reached the highest point of the mountain I felt myself very bad. That's why I want to try myself and fly in such a plain.
ReplyDeleteSeems it was a very pleasant morning out for both of you! This edition of Simply Moderne looks very tempting.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me a comment. Your kind words encourage me to keep sharing my work and stories.
