On the Design Wall
I don't remember the last time I made a simple quilt of squares.
I recently tidied and refolded my stash of fabrics and noticed I have mostly blues so that's where I started pulling fabrics for this quilt. I added some oranges and golds to warm up the blue shades and add some sparkle.
There's no theme to the mix of prints. It was a case of using what looked good as I went along. You'll see there's lots of daisy prints, florals and dots. Some fabrics I've had for years, others are fairly new.
I found a fabric butterfly in my scraps. It seemed particularly attracted to the blue daisies. It kept me company as I cut.
After a morning of listening to music and making fabric fly around the room as I gave my rotary cutter a good workout I now have 17 x 16 rows of 4.5 inch squares.
Now I just have to sew them together. One simple square quilt coming right up! Off to the sewing room I go! :)

ReplyDeleteQuilts made of squares are one of my favourite patterns. I love that the quilt is simply about the fabric and nothing else. Speaking of fabric, I really love yours! The blues with the oranges and golds are so beautifully balanced. It's the kind of quilt that reminds me of my grandmother; fun and snuggly!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty Rachael. Love your squares.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the simple quilts become our firm favourites. I love what you're doing with those squares. Its lovely!
ReplyDeleteThis is the perfect kind of quilt for everyday living! I love the way quilts like this one can be a snapshot of our stash. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThese prints are all so pretty together! Beautiful! And how did I miss your last post of completing your Octopus's Garden quilt! Oy! It's so gorgeous, and your pics at the beach are lovely! You're so brave to lay a new quilt out on what could be a very nasty surface....how do you do it? I'm always cringing over a newly finished quilt...."Honey! Be careful with that!" Poor man! LOL
ReplyDeleteDaisies & dots -- you can't go wrong!
ReplyDeleteYay! It's beautiful, and completely YOU. Sometimes simple styling is the best to show off your delightful stash.
ReplyDeleteLook, I love all quilts I really do, but at the end of the day my favorite are always simple patchwork. I don't know if it is because those are the quilts I had when I was a kid or because I like like the lines and squares. This is awesome! So glad you shared it! :)
ReplyDeleteI love a 1 patch, so simple and basic yet beautiful depending on the fabrics you pick. You have a winner!
ReplyDeleteLove your colors! That pop of gold is just perfect.
ReplyDeleteSometimes simple is best. A great quilt to let the fabric tell the story!
ReplyDeleteLovely and simple but very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI colori della primavera!
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's fun to just....sew, which is exactly what I need to do for myself. Hey, I like those big white daisies on blue you put in there :o)
ReplyDeleteSo much to look at! Sometimes simple is the best! Love this quilt!

ReplyDeleteSimply sweet! I love your new header too, Rachael!
ReplyDeletewhat a great way to document your wonderful fabric collection - simple and lovely!!
ReplyDeleteEven simple squares sewn together takes some thought and planning. Yours looks so lively and energized. Especially by adding those oranges and golds. Great plan.
ReplyDeleteWhat an enviable gift you have, to truly SEE colour and see what you need to do to get the viewer to see the colour too. Adding orange to better see the blue is to me profound...I get the science of it but the practice...not so much! I shall just keep looking through your eyes and wondering at what I see.
ReplyDeleteFabulous Rachael...you have a real way with colour and all with a butterfly to keep you company!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Beautiful Blues
ReplyDeleteHi, Rachael. There's nothing like a good, ol' fashioned "square" quilt--lovely color combination! And your Octopus's Garden is smashing--Love all those points!

Very nice! This is exactly the kind of quilt that made me want to learn to sew--scrappy and simple. I have mostly blue in my stash too. I think it just must be a popular fabric color because it isn't my favorite, but I sure have a lot of it. Pink is the runner up, but that makes more sense because I have three daughters:)
ReplyDeleteOh my, a single patch quilt made with gorgeous fabrics never fails to impress and warm the cockles of my heart. Beautifully simple and simply beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSimply lovely.
ReplyDeleteOh I love this Rachael - nothing quite like simple patchwork and the blues and golds together work perfectly :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me a comment. Your kind words encourage me to keep sharing my work and stories.
