Horned Melon...
After going round and round in circles I'm happy to declare this top finished.
I just need to make the backing, baste it and then I'll be hand quilting these with big perle cotton stitches. It seems the obvious choice. My sewing machine hasn't returned from having it's service. Why does it always take longer than they say! I lasted a week before I had to get out my old 1960's Bernina, fondly known as Betty. It's been at least a year, maybe 2 since I used her but she sewed beautifully... backwards... It took me a while to remember which knob changed the direction. It amazes me now that I sewed quite a few quilts and even quilted with her.
This is what Betty and I made... Something quick and fun. I just couldn't resist those Lauralee Zebra prints. Sis Boom meets Gees Bend!! I'm calling it Wild Thing!
Here's the back, I really did my best to line up the fabrics down the middle seam. I don't think anyone will be checking out my derrière so closely that they'll notice it's not quite perfect, the skirt, not my derrière!
Now this is worth checking out! We found green spiky mystery fruits growing in our garden. They're about 6-7inches long.
A bit of research showed them to be Horned Melons. Gbf bravely tried one, he says they taste like a cross between a lime and a banana. Weird! We've been trying to figure out how they came to be growing in our garden. We figure a bird must have dropped a seed as it was flying over onto far away places.
Or maybe they are really from Mars and a family of aliens stopped by in our garden to have a picnic and dropped a few seeds.
Or maybe a rose thorn said to a pumpkin, how about we get together and pretend to be a melon.
Or maybe...

How funny about those melons!
ReplyDeleteLove the new skirt. look forward to seeing you wear it.
That top will look fabulous with that perle thread quilting.
ReplyDeleteDress making eh? What's next? Its a very cool skirt.
Betty is gorgeous. That would have been funny pressing the pedal and then sewing backwards.
Those melons don't look too inviting with all those spikes. Did you try them? They look rather difficult too peel. Better watch for any strange changes in Gbf (in case they really did come from Mars).
Ha ha to all the maybes Rachael...that's something you could go on forever with! Love that skirt...great colour choice....and fantastic quilt...gosh you have been very busy!
ReplyDeleteBetty is a classic be nice to her. The circles are super.
ReplyDeleteNice use of the zebras!!!

ReplyDeleteNice use of the zebras!!!
That melon is amazing. Isn't it weird when you find something growing in your garden that is completely out of place.
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt and Wild Thing is truly wild!
How weird is that to have a mutant growing in your garden?!? I've never seen such a thing! How fun!
ReplyDelete"Wild thing...you make my heart sing!!" And the circled squares look great (I have all that fabric, including the dark blue around the outside!!!) This quilt will look fabulous quilted with big stitch perle! You have been busy!
ReplyDeleteLove the Animal Print log cabins. I bought 6 1/2 yards of the same prints and wasn't sure what I'd do with them, but I certainly like this!
ReplyDeleteCool melon. We can't get anything ripe in our garden. We live in a neighborhood with a million squirrels. They eat everything about 2 days before it gets ripe.
I love your circles, the perle cotton will be so nice on there too.
ReplyDeleteYour zebras are so zingy and fun. What a great and simple idea!
I would be afraid to eat that crazy looking alien food!
I love your new skirt! The fabric is so pretty. I think it looks perfect!! Was it hard to make?
ReplyDeleteWild thing turned out awesome!!! You are going to show more pictures of your circle quilt all stitched up? pretty please!! I think perle cotton stitches will look incredible!!!
I hope you get your machine back soon!!!!
I think gbf planted the horned melons while you were busy sewing!! I think he secretly wanted to grow them lol!!!
How busy have you been? Lots to show.
ReplyDeleteThe top looks great. Love Wild Thing and the skirt. Bet you are glad you had Betty as back up!
Strange melons!!! What can I say?
So glad you have a back-up machine. I am an advocate for having (at least) 2 machines. And you two are doing some fun things together.
ReplyDeleteImagine if that melon-y thing had legs! Very scarey!
You've been so industrious! I'm sure Betty was thrilled to sew Wild Thing--it's such a party with all those Sis Boom zebra stripes together. And that skirt...love! I have the fabric waiting for something special. Maybe a skirt is the answer.
ReplyDeleteThat garden of yours is so magical. Producing mystery fruit is quite a big deal.
Fun post! Machines that help out in your time of need! Melons that magically appear! Pretty quilts to hand stitch! Looking forward to seeing that first quilt quilted! ;)
ReplyDeleteAmazing post. Not sure where to start with the I LOVE ITS.....I love it all. Love meeting Betty and love the Summerville and Flea MArket Fancy!
ReplyDeleteI love your skirt!
ReplyDelete"Volunteer" plants are especially funny if you've never grown that particular plant before. I thought it looked like a very defensive cucumber :)
smile ... :-))) ... this is funny with your melone!!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilts, and the skirt is beautiful! Nice job matching the design, too! That is one weird looking melon.....I'd be afraid! lol
ReplyDeletehahaha and that is why I love you!! Weird fruit!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finish. Betty is brilliant, love the zebra prints (so very Jerseylicious!). The skirt is beautiful and I suspect lots of people will be checking your butt in that!! :)
Fun post! I love your "Wild Thing." It's very entertaining to see where the stripes connect and then they don't. Have fun wearing that gorgeous skirt and eating that funny melon!
ReplyDeleteHee hee, love the backwards sewing machine :oD
ReplyDeleteMy machine goes in tomorrow. They’re saying a week and Im preparing for two ! Listen to me whinge and whine...
ReplyDeleteThat horned melon looks like an alien fruit...
Love Wild Thing...
Love your Wild Thing! What a fun quilt.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, the machine service. I finally broke down and bought a 2nd (smaller for travel) machine. They don't have loaners, like car repair places sometimes do. They ought to!
That is a very strange fruit. Make sure gbf is not sprouting weird things one day soon! And I love the photo of the fruit on the "spiky" plate!!
I'm having a giveaway on my blog:

That circle quilt looks gorgeous - you have also gave me inspiration for my BQS mini and put more Summersville in it :)
ReplyDeleteBetty and you work well together. Hope your machine is ready soon!
ReplyDeleteLove seeing all the wild things including the squash from mars. I think my son would enjoy seeing that. He always thought he came form Mars. I will ask him if he had seen something like this over there :0
Love the skirt, well done!!! Had a laugh about the backwards sewing.
