Yo' Yo Yo's
I've become obsessed with Yo Yo's,
or Suffolk Puffs as they're also known.
I've been raiding my kitchen cupboards for plates, bowls, glasses and anything round to use as templates.
The plan is lots of colourful different sized Yo Yo's all sewn together.
They're perfect for quiet hand sewing or while watching Tv. Great to do a couple here and there when there's a few free minutes. Fun to make using up scraps or little pieces of favourite fabrics. I don't use a lot of solid fabrics in my work but with Yo Yo's the crinkles add the pattern to the otherwise flat colour for a fabulous result. They're quick to make and it's satisfying to see the colourful pile grow.
I sewed a few puffs to add to my Dollop of Cream quilt and got carried away in my neutral fabrics and whipped up a little mini quilt.
The Puffs are about 2 inches across and the finished quilt is about 12 inches square.
I think they look a bit like the tops of cupcakes.
It was a great opportunity to sort through my treasure jar of buttons.
Another thing I enjoy about making these is seeing how the final shape plays with the pattern on fabrics.Check out this stripey Yo Yo. It's like an optical illusion. I wonder if a quilt of all stripes would be too much? I might just have to try it...
Have you ever made YoYo's or Suffolk Puffs?

YES! I have made two yo-yo quilts! One in scrappy colours and the other in blues and greens! Sadly, I no longer have them! Yours are really, really pretty!
ReplyDeleteYou have been very creative there! I've never tried these but I like the vintage look of all the neutrals together. Have fun!

I love your Yoyos! They remind me of the chocolate drops we used to get in the bag of mixed lollies but yours are more colourful of course! Your mini quilt is the cutest!
ReplyDeleteYo Rachael! Those yo-yo's are looking good. I have never made them but I have seen a whole double bed size throw made out of yo-yo's. Now there is something to keep you busy for a while...
ReplyDeleteYour Dollop of Cream mini is delectable! I love the interesting buttons you used, very different from ones I've seen. Where did you collect them from? I've never made yo-yos but they are on the list of things I'd like to make.
ReplyDeleteLove your yo-yos and the idea of using different sizes in a quilt sounds like great fun. I have only made a few of them for embellishments, may have to try some more!
ReplyDeletebrilliant! I've made some and they are addictive! Love the different sizes and the ones with the buttons - what a great way to show off your favourite buttons!
ReplyDeleteYo yo's and buttons--a match made in heaven! I find it hard to pass up an opportunity to embellish with yo yo's, as you know. Another way to use favorite scraps. I have yet to make them into whole cloth but I think your mini quilt idea would be a great starting point for that.
ReplyDeleteMy heart started beating faster as I read your post. I want to make yo yos!! And I'm in a "crazy about buttons" mood, too! Your little mini is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteYour yo-yo's are delightful! I just love your cupcake quilt with the fun buttons! I think combining sizes of yo-yo's is new. I had planned to make a yo-yo quilt a few years ago. Made several hundred yo-yo's, enough for a few large pillows, and got tired of making them. A friend needed some for her project, so I just gave them to her.
ReplyDeleteMai fatti.....devo rimediare al piĆ¹ presto
ReplyDeletebelli i tuoi colorati, sembrano confettini....

ReplyDeleteI jumped on the yoyo bandwagon a month or so ago after seeing a lovely red and white quilt made from them . I suspect thats going to be a very long term project!
I've never been a fan of yo-yo's but oh my, love yours. that Dollop is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteCrikey...now I see why you are familiar with the Sewing Frenzy! How delightfully addictive these little treasures seem. I have not made them before but we have received lots - on T-shirts, hair slides etc. But never have I seen them used so joyously and so subtly. Puff on I say! Check out the knitter's version http://tinyowlknits.wordpress.com/the-beekeepers-quilt/ If you google beekeepers quilt and look at Images you will see knitterly puffery gone wild.

ReplyDeleteI love the little quilt - it is so wonderful with the neutrals and those buttons and beads. I could eat it up!

I'm not a fan of yo-yo's, but I love your heart in that first pic, it reminds me of the little frosting rosettes on top of cake! Yum!
ReplyDeleteIt must be time for morning tea with frosted cup cakes. Your yo-yo's make my mouth water. Definately eye candy!!
ReplyDeleteThe striped one reminds me of salt water taffey.
Always something new and so you. Horray
Yes, I've made yo yo's. The last time was as accents on a mini quilt. I love your mini quilt, and that's a great use of your buttons.
