Waltzing Matilda
Here it is... the grand unveiling of my finished Waltzing Matilda quilt!!
The front is made entirely of two of my most favourite fabrics, Nuala and Matilda, both by Jennifer Paganelli of Sis Boom but from ranges released a few years apart. Everyone knows I love Jennifer's beautiful rich, bright colours. Creating gorgeous toiles in these fabulous colours is brilliant in my humble opinion!
I was limited with the design because I only had fat quarters of some of the fabrics and didn't want to waste even a corner by doing any curved piecing, so that left squares or triangles. I'd just received a big book of quilt block designs and I'd have to say I must have been influenced because it does look like one big giant block. It wasn't thought out before hand. I'm a real player in the sewing room, stick a bit of fabric on the design wall and see what happens.
At 96 by 96 inches it was way too huge to quilt myself and I’m lucky enough to know the best longarm quilter, Tanya Croft. The pattern she chose for this quilt couldn’t be more perfect. It echoes the fabric patterns with free flowing, beautiful, botanical lines.
The backing is also made up of Sis Boom fabrics, Ann Flower Mural in the green and brown colourways. I just can’t get enough of a good thing!
I had some help styling the photos. Gbf’s parents were visiting recently so off we went to show them some local sites. I took Waltzing Matilda along. They really got into the spirit of coming up with ideas and climbing through bush and over rocks to get photos.
Thanks Joan and Brian!!! And Gbf!!!
As for the title...For those of you that don’t know - The song Waltzing Matilda is so very Australian, an unofficial National Anthem. Seeing as the fabric is called Matilda, the quilt just had to be Waltzing Matilda.

That is stunning! Sooo beautiful! The back drops for the photos were perfect! I'm glad they didn't drop it off that ledge! hehe
ReplyDeleteOh, I think Gbf's parent's have your same wacky sense of humour! What fun you had wrapping the tree with your quilt! It is an Australian beauty! I hope it gets a grand reception at the Quilt Show!
ReplyDeleteRachael you should be very proud! your quilt is brilliant! I love the fabrics and the idea of one huge overall design is fantastic! Very modern and traditional all at once!!! You are so right that now matter how you fold it - it is still perfect. I love the backing fabric! I am sure there will be plenty of Ohhh's and Ahhhhh's at the show :)
ReplyDeleteGeorgeous Colors here are tropical and very rich just your sort.

Lovely photography Rachael! I love the colors and it sure is the one to be crunched up and get cozy in kind of quilt.
ReplyDeleteIt does look like a fab big block! And love that everyone got in on the act with the photo shoot
ReplyDeleteIt sure looks great hanging high up in the hall.

Gorgeous!!!! I do like it all scrunched up and cozy like!! It looks like everyone had fun helping out with the photos =D
ReplyDeleteIt's the perfect way to use your favorites! The large dramatic scale, the bold colors, the backing...all in keeping with the feelings and sentiments of Sis Boom and Blue Mountain Daisy. That's a fabulous accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteI think this quilt has many fun adventures ahead.
It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWowee kazowee! Just wonderful. I love your point about quilts looking great scrunched or folded. Sometimes we forget that they won't always be hung on the design wall. I'm sure it will be a big hit at the show!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you all had a great time of it, poising the quilt for it's pictures! Fun! And Waltzing Matilda is stunning.....I love it!

ReplyDeleteThought it might have been the big little block quilt from the teaser.
ReplyDeleteAwesome staging for the pics but I did have a seconds worry when I saw it hanging over the edge of the cliff.

Beautiful Rachael. That is going to stand out in the crowd for it's beautiful bright colours and wonderful design.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love it!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope the shot of it dangerously dangling over the cliff wasn't as dangerous as it looks.
Super quilt, RD! You should be proud
It's absolutely beautiful Rachael! Such a gorgeous explosion of colour! I have to say I think i prefer quilts when they're left on a couch or bed all haphazard, just crawled out of and ready to be crawled back under :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautifully rich and colourful quilt! The name of your quilt is perfect and I love all of your photos in the bush.
ReplyDeleteWow Rachael! It is gorgeous! Congratulations. You have worked magic with those JP fabrics.
