Wild Goose Chase
I recently realised that one of my favourite quilts, Wild Goose Chase only ever got a brief mention on my blog as part of another post so I decided to give it its own moment in the spotlight.
I made Wild Goose Chase 5 years ago. It was soon after the first issue of Fat Quarterly ezine came out. In one of the articles the six contributers each made their own versions of a Flying Geese block. I was inspired to see what I could come up with. I decided to get wonky so pulled out some stripey scraps and started to sew. This quilt just grew from there.
So why is Wild Goose Chase a favourite quilt of mine? Well there's so much to see in this quilt! I find I get caught looking at the different shapes, and then I enjoy the way the stripes lead off into all directions and then back again, there's just so much movement. The few dots here and there add a hint of dotty goodness. I know it's quite a busy quilt but I find the nautical colours help calm it down a little.
If I need a break from all those stripes. I can flip it over and reveal another quilt of big simple flying geese. The middle triangle disappearing point leads to the reverse side.
I really like the way the quilting echoes the geese pattern on this side.
I like both sides equally so I think of it as a two sided quilt rather than a front and back. Add that to the list of reasons why it's a favourite.
It's only a small quilt, perfect for a wall hanging at 24 inches square,
but it's not the size that counts, it's how it looks on the day :) .
I'm linking up to Bloggers Quilt Festival. Thanks to Amy for hosting a great event that allows bloggers to share their quilts, see other quilter's wonderous work of all styles and enjoy visiting new exciting blogs.

ReplyDeleteHi Rachael this mini quilt is gorgeous, well done xx
ReplyDeleteWild indeed!!! I can tell you had great fun making this Rachael! And who doesn't love a two sided quilt- two for the price of one!!!
ReplyDeleteLove both sides too. It's a fun quilt and I love the way you have made the flying geese. Another gorgeous quilt.
ReplyDeleteThis little cutey has so much movement and really keeps your eye searching for the pattern. I love how you did the back too, great idea!
ReplyDeleteI don't which side I like the best! The back is so fantastic and the front is so fun to look at. I love the nautical theme of the fabrics and the yipes stripes - they are great especially on the binding ;)
ReplyDeletelove it!
Oh yes, you have been remiss. This is a very exciting quilt...sort of Brian Wildsmith meets Op Art. I particularly like how it contrives to be so flowing and organic when made up of precise stripes. The quilting gives a squishy pillow curve to each triangle in a way I don't think I have ever attended to before. I like this one a lot!
ReplyDeleteA charmer! I love flying geese, too, but I now need to try them wonkily.
ReplyDeletei love how you put your own modern spin on a classic! you're pretty bad ass in my book!
ReplyDeletethe mixer beaters on the back side!!! big smiles! oh how i love your randomness!
You did have fun with this one! I love the way you have that perfect square and the careful matching of the binding, and then pretty much everything else is wonked.
ReplyDeleteThose geese are full of energy! I love to see quilts that come from challenging one's self. It's always a benefit to step outside that box, even if we do play in a rather large box already. :)
ReplyDeleteReally great quilt. This one definitely has some zing and zang going on! LOVE all the stripes.:)
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing tame about these geese. They are a free spirited flock. I admire your improv ability. It's truly refreshing.
ReplyDeleteI love all the striped geese, the whole quilt reminds me of looking down from a height and seeing a whole lot of house roofs in a street below.
ReplyDeleteEvery quilt loves a show of its own.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I just LOVE this quilt! All those stripes going every which way, but with just enough organization to keep it from being too unruly. I'm so glad you showed it again. I don't recall seeing it before. Bravo!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a two sided quilt! Love both sides, each one so different. You did well to match the stripes. I like the busyness of all the stripes, it works well.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful Flying Geese quilt you have made there!
ReplyDeleteI really like this one. The stripes and colours remind me of my granddads pyjamas. It feels safe and warm.
ReplyDeleteSo unique and fun! Love the wonkyness of the geese. Kinda feel like this is the rebel flock flying to thier own beat! Makes me smile!
ReplyDeleteOoh Rachel I love this one - both sides!!! You're so right about the nautical colors - it's exciting and calming at the same time. LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a charming quilt, I love the movement that the stripes create, it has a very vintage and loved feel to it too, no wonder it's one of your favourites.
ReplyDeleteLove the stripes.
ReplyDeleteIf a quilt doesn't make you smile it has lost it's purpose. I love that you just make things work for you mostly I think without a pattern. I should sit down to the sewing machine some day and just sew with scraps and see what happens. Probably wouldn't be as beautiful as your crafting but just maybe I might be surprised with the outcome. Happy day to you and your little gem. Thanks for the inspiration. Janita
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteEspecial the turquoise punches..the dots that pop in for a bit of surprise.
The flip side is great, nicely done! It would be a favourite if I owned it also.
WOW, all that in only 24"! I was quite surprised and impressed with all the action you got going on in there :) I do like the matching stripes and how the quilting pattern shows up on the back.
ReplyDeleteI remember some of the components and it is lovely to see the quilt all together in the Spot Light. Hills Hoists are perfect for outdoor photo shoots.
