Playing Favourites...
Mary of Molly Flanders recently posed the question
"What is your favourite quilt?"
I've wondered about it for a couple of days and have narrowed it down to 4 quilts... here they are.. quick, before I change my mind and think of other favourites :)
First up is the very first quilt I made.
Whenever I pull this quilt out to use I still stop to admire the fabulous fabrics and colours. These fabrics are the reason I'm a quilter. I couldn't resist those big, bright modern patterns, I just had to use them to make something! This quilt is simply called The Rachael Quilt and will always be special because it started me on my quilting journey.
My next favourite quilt, Lucky Dip, was my first exploration into liberated quilting. I'd bought Gwen Marston's Liberated Quitmaking book. The next day I start sewing scraps together. I became obsessed and 3 weeks later I had a finished quilt.
Lucky Dip is such a big, colourful scrappy cosy quilt that lives on the couch. A perfect Sunday afternoon reading quilt or it keeps us warm on winter evenings when watching movies. Every time I use it I spy surprise combinations of fabrics or favourite fabric scraps that make me smile.
My Super Star quilt is a favourite for sure!
It's a such striking quilt. I really love everything about this quilt. It has my favourite backing made with an odd assortment of ugly fabrics which proved to me every fabric has a place. I also really enjoyed quilting it with perle thread in lots of different colours. Thanks to Tonya Ricucci and UnRuly Quilting blog for inspiring this quilt with her Unruly Amish challenge.
My fourth favourite is another challenge quilt. Oi Emu was made in response to a corduroy sew along hosted my LeeAnn of Nifty Quilts in honour of Corduroy Day 11/11/11. I enjoy this quilt because of the it's neutral colours, the movement in the shapes and the textures of the corduroy, linen and upholstery fabrics. And it looks great on my lounge room wall!
So these are my favourites today... if you ask me next week I'll probably have different choices. I believe every very quilt has a little spark that makes it special.
If you're curious about reading more about these quilts here are the links to the original posts...
So... Do you have a favourite quilt?
Tell me about it or write a post and link up with Molly Flanders blog where Mary is hosting a linky party for fabulous favourites!!

It would be so hard to pick! I love that you still have the first quilt in your possession and I'm so happy that it got you started on your quilting journey.
ReplyDeleteThere are many times when the answer to "which quilt is your favorite?" would be the one I'm working on at the moment. It's so easy to be in the Now during those times.
Thanks for sharing these currents faves!
I can see why each of those quilts would be your favorite! Love the way you play with fabric. Your wall quilt is really quite brilliant.:) I linked up my favorite (for now) quilt too. lol
ReplyDeleteAll beautiful for the spirit they reflect. Your spirit of adventure.
ReplyDeleteI do have a favourite quilt! My wonky block, even though I am not so keen on the quilting...the only quilting I paid for! LOL I should talk about it again.
ReplyDeleteI do like your super star quilt - it is so striking.
What fun to see your progression as a quilt maker. The star and emu quilts are two of my all-time favorite quilts anywhere! You were combining color and shape so beautifully from the beginning. I'm not surprised!
ReplyDeleteNon saprei scegliere qual'รจ il mio quilt preferito, per me sono come dei figli!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCiao
Four fabulous quilts
ReplyDeleteQuilts are like children I suspect- very hard to pick a favourite. I love all your quilts Rachael!
ReplyDeleteAll beautiful Rachael and full of colour.....I always also think that the first quilt is very special!
ReplyDeleteI love them all! I enjoyed reading a bit about each quilt - I think it's always so difficult to pick a favourite because they are all in unique categories of their own, so you're not really able to compare apples with apples. I need a 'Lucky Dip' quilt to live on the couch!
ReplyDeleteThey are all beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh, oh...my heart is singing. I just love them all. You should not have stopped at four.
ReplyDeleteEach one of your quilts is delightfully original and truly beautiful. So lovely to see 4 of them in this post.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I couldn't answer that question. Like you my mind changes roughly everyday. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat collection, love the corduroy one with the emu :o)
ReplyDeleteI love all of the favourites you've showcased here but honestly your first ever quilt just speaks to me ! The colours and fabrics are amazing- very "bohemian " looking.
ReplyDeleteYou quilt so prolifically I bet it was hard to narrow it down to 4 favourites !
My favourite quilt every is probably still my batik hexagon quilt . I love that quilt and it makes me happy every time I look at it.
Wow! Thanks for sharing Rachael! And thanks for the suggestion that this would be a good party! It is! I would have a difficult time deciding between all of your quilts. I most definitely love the star quilt. It seems this may be the first time I have seen the Rachael Quilt....beautiful. It didn't make the cut here, but I have always loved the LOVE quilt you made! So many fabulous quilts made by you :)
ReplyDeleteThese are all gorgeous! But how did Dollop of Cream and Finding my way in the Mountains not make the top four!?! LOL And I'm still in love with your Waltzing Matilda quilt, too! Sheesh! I love them all! :o)
ReplyDeleteStunning quilts Rachael - choosing a personal favourite quilt is a tough choice - each one tends to be my favourite at the time of making them.
ReplyDeleteHow on earth did you narrow it down to those four, it must have been so hard. You have so many beautiful quilts, these are wonderful as are your Love quilt, Jumping Jack Flash and Crazy Love, and all the rest!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful post!
ReplyDeleteI Love your Emu quilt. I remember that one and think I was new to your blog.
The star is an absolute knock out! so graphic and fun.
Wow, your first quilt is fabulous. I wish mine had been. I love the fabrics and the general cozy feel of it.
Also love your Lucky Dip quilt. Okay, I love all your quilts! I admire your work so much and it gives me such a feeling kinship and inspiration!
xx
I know these are your favourites, and it is not our job to pick one, but I am surprised to find that of these, my favourite is the corduroy one! I am always saying that I am a colour girl, but then that always seems to be followed by how in this case, I like the piece that emphasizes texture rather than colour. Maybe I really am a texture girl instead! Who knew?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, they are all nice, but I really do love the emu. It makes me think...
I think they are great choices. And, yes, you can easily change your mind next week and have different ones. That's why we make so many.
ReplyDeleteRachael,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely show. I love them all. I wouldn't be able to decide one as favorite. each one has it's own place in my heart and love them for different reason. Totally inspired!
I think all of your quilts are just wonderful, but you know I'm very partial to Dollop of Cream. And I also am in love with Grandiflora.
ReplyDeleteYour Super Star is one of my all time favorites! It is hard to pick out just one!
ReplyDeletePicking a favorite of yours! No easy!
ReplyDeleteThe first 2 are, I'm sure, sentimental favs for you. The last 2 may be may all time favs!
What an intriguing treat to see your first quilt. I can understand why you just could not stop after the first! I love the idea behind the liberation quilting, it would absolutely transform your relationship with quilting.

ReplyDeletewonderful quilts - great to see them again. of course I'm partial to the Liberated Amish!
ReplyDeleteThey are all so gorgeous but the Amish inspired star quilt is my favorite! My first quilt wasn't much of a wowza but a fall tumbler quilt which was certainly one if my firsts is my fave. I shudder a little when I see the binding but I love all the fabrics I painstakingly chose.
ReplyDeleteGreat choices! I would find it hard to narrow down too. I like looking at my older quilts too and seeing my fabric combinations. For me every quilt is an exercise in colour.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me a comment. Your kind words encourage me to keep sharing my work and stories.
