Heroes
When Le Challenge announced their recent theme of Heroes I honestly thought I might skip this one. Heroes just didn't spark any inspiration. I did try to get enthused by pulling some Superman fabric out of my stash. It just sat there on my cutting mat...
In the meantime I did a tutorial about how I applique circles...
I figure I had to use that sample circle for something and not let it go to waste.
I have way too many quilts on the go so I thought to myself , Why not make a scarf?
So I did...
I was cutting out circles when Superman called out and said he wanted to be included in my scarf. You can't argue with Superman.
So the Man of Steel got to be part of the bubbly fun.

Last week had an interesting turn of events. Tuesday was just a blur of fire engine sirens as a nearby part of the Blue Mountains was ravaged by bushfire. We packed our bags in case we needed to evacuate.
The fires burned more than 1300 hectares of bush over a few days. Hundreds of firefighters did an amazing job of fighting the fire and saving homes.
This morning Gbf and I went to inspect the charred remains of what was once lush green bush. It was really quite eerie walking through the black landscape. The smell of smoke still filled the air and we even came across the occasional tree that was still smouldering.
Those brave Firefighters put their lives on the line to save ours and our homes. It's hard to find the words for what that means. Simply, they are real life Heroes.
After that I think Heroes is a brilliant theme. It's a great reminder that there are heroes all around making the world a much better place to be.

Fabulous! The circles are brilliant, those retro prints work really well with the superman! The fire must have been scary and fire fighters are super people!
ReplyDeleteamazing circles :-) Have you posted the tutorial - I had a quick search and couldn't find it. Bush fires are scary things - firefighters are truely heroes.
ReplyDeleteYes it was a frightening day and those firies are the best! One of then could even be your neighbour.
ReplyDeleteLove the scarf too.
the scarf is just fun. I agree firefighters are heroes....
ReplyDeleteunsung heroes especially when they are volunteer firefighters like the ones this week on the Jersey shore trying to save businesses and the boardwalk that just reopened after Hurricane Sandy last year, sad.
glad your didn't have to evacuate....

Your scarf is fabulous! The devastation those fires caused, not so fabulous. Glad you stayed safe, and yes firefighters are amazing people.
ReplyDeleteI love your scarf. It's not too over the top superman so you can wear it anywhere.
ReplyDeleteGlad you were safe from the fires. Ahh the joy of living in the mountains. It won't be long before the bush looks alive again. With just the occasional burnt tree.
Love your fun scarf. I cannot imagine how scary those fires must have been. Glad all is now OK and you were not forced to evacuate.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, your scarf and the post, very moving.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about the fire on your beloved mountain. Bless the heroes who fight fires.
ReplyDeleteThe fabrics you used in your scarf are super (man) beautiful. Have a good week Rachael.
Beautiful scarf!
ReplyDeleteThanks goodness for brave people who risk their lives to tackle fires!! How awful to have all that bush burnt!
I truly enjoy your very original work! Your scarf is beautiful. We've had a huge fire in Calif. still burning. So grateful to all our heroes!
ReplyDeleteI like the way Superman sneaked into your scarf project. Sometimes you just have to listen to the fabric.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad the fire didn't reach you. Having your evacuation kit together is always a bit nerve racking. Well, the waiting bit is anyway. (While I read that part, I was thinking about Mrs. Rika Ray in Four Fires, sitting under her wool carpet in the stream.)
I'm glad you are all ok, Rachael.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice take a break once in a while and do something different. Your scarf looks wonderful - very cool and fresh!
I'm so glad your home is ok!! Sitting through a forest fire this past summer here, too, was not fun in the least. And it's so heartbreaking to see the destruction. Superman on your scarf is so perfect. :)
ReplyDeleteMy goodness! I'm so glad you and your home are safe and sound. That blackened landscape will surely inspire more contemplation and creative ideas. I hope you'll post photos of the new green sprouts when they come. Thank you for the reminder about the heroes out there, both seen and unseen. Your scarf has become a tribute to them.
ReplyDeleteHow scary! We do not live in an area that has fires so I can't even imagine what it must have felt like.
ReplyDeleteYour scarf is so inventive and you will always have a super hero around should you need one....
Wind, water, fire are such indiscriminate levelers. I am grateful your Heros kept you & yours safe.
ReplyDeleteYour forest and your mountain..that is so scary. Yup on the everyday heros...TBTG
ReplyDeleteOh wow...you managed real heroes, hope you are all safe now. The scarf is superb and a great idea for something different.
ReplyDeleteYay for the firemen! I also love that you have superman on your scarf now lol
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, the fire must have been scary and upsetting. I've never lived in a fire zone, so can only imagine.
ReplyDeleteYour scarf is so inventive and fun.
i love the prints, especially Superman :)

Lovely circles! and you are so right about those real heroes around us.
ReplyDeleteFab scarf and perfect circles. Sad about the bushland and its poor little creatures.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are safe and sound...very scary with bushfires so close......did you pack your favourite quilt and some handwork.....
ReplyDeleteI did wonder whether those fires were near you. Glad to see you're safe and sound. Bushfires are just so devastating and unpredictable.
ReplyDeleteLove that Superman got a look in on your scarf. Quirky idea but it works beautifully!
I agree with your comments about all our firefighters..! They are amazing people and I am always grateful for the wonderful work they do. I did not realise the recent fires were so close to you. We were shocked to see the news reports of how much damage there has been. Looks like a tough Summer ahead.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous work with your circles on the scarf - lovely idea.
That does look like a fun--and super-strong--scarf.
ReplyDeleteVery creative - I love that Superman fabric.
ReplyDeleteSuperman looks very inspired to be on your scarf. You will be looking very smart! The remains of a big fire are very eerie. We had that experience just last year around here.:)
ReplyDeleteA bush fire, already? I hope you get some nice gentle rains so the landscape can green up again - if you do it will go green very quickly.
ReplyDeleteLOL, love that Superman said he had to be part of the scarf.
Oh dear, it is just too early in the season to be thinking about fire...fingers crossed that you are done for the summer.
ReplyDeleteYour diversions from quilts are as fun as the quilts. The bubbles and fabric convergences are delightful. Hang on to Superman.
Nice!! And yes, you have to do what Superman says. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Rachael...haha just read the above comment about doing what Superman says...I totally agree LOL! Your scarf is brilliant...love it!
ReplyDeleteOh such a close call you have had with the fires...those Firies are certainly Heroes!!!
My goodness, I was watching the fires on the news and had no idea you were near all of that, how frightening for you. Yup, I agree, Heroes is a brilliant theme after-all. Now to watch those lovely fresh green tips bloom from the blackness of the burnt trees, it's a beautiful sight to see the bush regenerate.
ReplyDeleteWow - that's all a bit real and scary - having to pack your bags just in case! Thanks to those real life Supermen, you were safe. Your little scarf is great fun and all the better for having Superman on it! xCathy
