UnRuly Love

Tonya, of Lazy Gal Quilting and author of  the wonderful Word Play Quilts book recently asked for contributions for a new quilt she has planned.

UnRuly letters L-O-V-E , X-O-X's hugs and kisses and Hearts. A beautiful colour scheme of white, cream, all sorts of brown with hints of turquoise, red, pink and black. For more info go to this post.

I haven't pieced the letters because Tonya is planning to mix them all up. They've got quite chunky edges that can be trimmed to fit where they end up.

I made a wonky heart and couldn't resist resting it in an "L" .

And here's my very wonky and very UnRuly kisses.

Meanwhile on my design wall....

In an attempt to organise my way too many UFO's I pulled out this old top, made back in the days when I didn't even know what a blog was. I've had this quilt top out to quilt a few times but then I get distracted and it ends up back in the cupboard...
So last week I got it out again...
and I decided it needed to be a bit bigger...
So I pieced lots of 3 inch squares for the borders.
But I still wasn't happy with the overall look of the quilt...
There was a dark burgundy border around the center blocks and I decided it just didn't look right so I've unpicked that.
Then I swapped some of the borders around so the fabrics worked better which entailed more unpicking...

So at the moment this quilt is all in pieces waiting for me to put it back together.

You might be wondering about the 9patch border, There's no rhyme or reason to the order of the blocks. I felt that it needed the irregular placement to add interest. That's one part of the quilt I like so it's safe from the unpicker... for now.

Let's hope I sew it all back together before I get distracted again...

Wow! You have some amazing fabrics in your UFO- the kitty sitting on the chair, the Amish (?) buggy! Do finish it, it will be beautiful! And your LOVE and kisses blocks are great!

I love the heart nestled against the L and the fuss cutting in the center of the blocks. Such fun!

Holy cow, Rachael! This quilt is gorgeous! Only you could get a civil war 'look' and yet you still used your modern fabrics! Amazing in every way! I love this! Oh, and your Unruly Love is awesome! Tonya's gonna go nuts!

your love letters are very elegant.
The quilt is looking good. Lots of work and you should enjoy the results. Even if you need to do some reverse stitching.

I also love all the little fussy cut centers of your UFO quilt. I could just snuggle up on the couch with it and look at all the different blocks =D

Love your "love" blocks! And your UFO is awfully sweet & you must still love it to devote so much un-picking time to it. I don't dare dig deeply in my cupboards!

Wow!So many things going on in your sewing room. The letters are fun and will be a delightful addition to that quilt.

As for your UFO....holy cow! I think I would have stuffed it further into a dark corner rather than unpick all those parts. But I know your end result will be well worth the efforts and all the time.

Your quilt is GORGEOUS! I love the order with the randomness, and the calm color palate. It's takes quite a talent like yours to achieve something so interesting with so few colors. Love your letters too! You always inspire me!

Also, your LOVE blocks for Tonya are super! She will love them, for sure. And thanks for the reminder - I'm supposed to be doing that too! Yeesh, can't forget!

Hahaha, I know about those quilt tops lurking in the corners, hoping one day they will become a quilt. I found some the other day and have nearly finished one! I have one that I have to unpick a whole lot of because, ahem, someone may have cut the pieces out at different sizes and they won't play together plus I then have the horrid feeling I kept the teensy scraps and threw out the edge pieces! So it needs a fair bit of remodelling.
Good luck in your efforts!

The quilt is fantastic Rachael, especially the fussy cut centres, you have to put it back together so we can all see how fabulous it is.
The letters, heart and X's look wonderful too.
