The Chickens Of Daisyland.
I've been meaning to introduce my chickens for some time now and what better time than Easter.
We'll start with Ginger Fluff. Her motto is "Can I have a banana?"
She's the adventurer of the two. When we let them out of the coop she heads straight for the horizon. We soon learnt to have a banana nearby to lure her home.
If she could be anything she would be an explorer and go in search of tropical islands full of tasty exotic fruit. Or an Astronaut because she thinks there are bananas on the moon.
She is an Isa Brown chicken but we think she has some Leghorn to give her such pretty marbled toffee coloured feathers.
Her best friend is Maybellene whose motto is "Eat now and think later!"
She lives for eating! Her favourite treats are bugs, and tomatoes, and silverbeet, and most other things too. If she could be anything it would be a chef cooking big hearty meals using all sorts of interesting and unusual ingredients.
We think Maybellene is part Isa Brown and part goat because of her inclination to eat everything and anything.
They are very best friends. I think because there is only two of them neither seems to be the bossy one. They play little chasey games and pinch food from each other but just when you think one is being more dominant somehow the tables turn and it's the other one calling the shots
The have a whole garden to explore but they like to eat in the same area as each other.
Sometimes they look like a two headed chicken.
It's been a funny ride adjusting to having chickens. There have been times they've been threatened with an axe but mostly they are very cute and very entertaining with their funny little ways.
And of course they produce such yummy eggs! Extra bright yellow yolks and whites so fluffy you just want to make omelettes.
So that's the story of Ginger Fluff and Maybellene, the happy little chickens of Daisyland.
They wish you all a very happy and Eggsellent Easter!

Chickens are such fun. We have just three and BTW the same chicken house as you have. Our girls are so pampered. They get hot cooked breakfast, a snack at lunch time and wheat at the end of the day. They give us lots of yummy eggs. We're so glad we have them
ReplyDeleteCheers
Linda
How lovely! A much nicer Easter tale than endless chocolate... Funnily enough, our dog is keen on banana too. After years of owning cats, who only want meat, it has been a surprise to find dogs enjoy all kinds of fruit and veg!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE chickens! So happy to meet yours. We had then a while ago but rehomed them when our daughter started crawling...through the poo! We have almost ready to get some more, just needing a fence which I have been meaning to do for about 6 months. We have foxes too!
ReplyDeleteThose girls sure are cute and the best recyclers too!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the pen phil!
Lovely interview and thanks for the mention.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Springwood quilt show next weekend.
Ginger Fluff is my favourite - any chook that likes eating bananas has to be great!
ReplyDeleteTheir house is fabulous - great job!!
Your girls look lovely! We would love to have chickens but need to wait till we get a bigger place-I hope we can find one that likes banana!
ReplyDeleteIt is a delight to meet your lovely girls. They do look gorgeous. Perfect to have them in the garden and I think their new coop is very flash and fancy.
ReplyDeleteLucky Chooks!!
Hoppy Easter to Daisyland!
ReplyDeleteOh this is such a delightful post. I just love your "girls" and I'm a little more than jealous. Their coloring is lovely and I bet they are such fun to watch.
I love their little hutch. A neighbor has one that is similar but I haven't seen any chickens yet here.
I would love to have some, but I think coco would drive them crazy.
I'll content myself to see yours and I hope you'll include them in posts from time to time.
congrats on being on Amy's site - I'm off to check it out!
What a wonderful feature on Amy's blog! It was fun to have a mini Rachael quilt show. It was fun to read about you and your quilting!
ReplyDeleteOh I enjoyed reading that! All the kiddies are in bed now, but I will make sure I show them Ginger Fluff and Maybellene in the morning - they'll love reading about them and seeing your fab photos. Your garden looks lovely! It's so funny that Ginger Fluff loves bananas. Our chickens love 'the white bucket' (aka an icecream container that we put our scraps in). If they see anyone holding a white container they dash over and almost climb up the person's leg. I love your little nest - such a great photo (and a great table centrepiece too!). BTW - I was just designing a pixellated flamingo quilt. You have flamingos as well as chickens!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for introducing us to these lovely girls. I had to laugh about Maybellene's appetite, she can't help it if she is always hungry! LOL I would love to have chickens one day.
ReplyDeleteFun chickens!! And I loved reading your articles on amy's blog. I hadn't seen some of those quilts you had made before - the neon circles is completely my favourite!!
ReplyDeleteOooh, fresh eggs, yummy! And hey, the more they eat the more flavourful, right?
ReplyDeleteLove that last photo lol!
ReplyDeleteSuch cute chickens. They seem to have such fun personalities :)
I've been wondering if you ever got any chickens....they look like mine ....Henny Penny and Laverne Defozio. Don't you think their eggs taste much better than store bought ! Have a blessed Easter Rachael.
ReplyDeleteWhat cute chickens. I loved hearing about their personalities and seeing pictures. I've never had chickens but moved to a small country town last year and some of my neighbors have chickens. I'll have to tell them about the fox proof chicken coop.
ReplyDeleteYour girls are so cute! I can almost hear that kind of purring-like clucking sound of a contented hen. Lucky pair to be living in your & gbf's garden!
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter!
Your chickens are beautiful, which is something I never thought I'd say about chickens. I wonder if they'll inspire a quilt someday. I'll email you a photo soon. xo
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have that chickens had that much personality. cute! and the eggs sound yummy!
ReplyDeleteChickens have a ton of personality dont they? And there is nothing like fresh eggs. Home raised chickens produce eggs with the most yellow yolks I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteYour two are so cute!
What great garden helpers you have in these two! And the eggs are a very tasty bonus.
ReplyDeleteI'm very impressed by their coop. It looks sturdy enough to keep out all manner of predators.
Your birds are so pretty! That coop is a work of art! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWe can't have chickens here. It's probably just as well, my dog isn't very chicken friendly. I would if I could though!
It must be the season for getting chickens. My father-in-law just got his first chickens (three, one for each of the grandkids). They are called Daphne (from the TV show Eggheads. Its a family favourite), Lisa (Gabe's cousin picked that one) and Rose (Gabe picked this one). I was surprised by his name choice thinking it would be more boy like. There are definitely foxes around here too. People have told me they have seen them. Enjoy your eggs. I grew up on my Nan and Pop's eggs. Yumm. My other grandparents had chooks too and I remember having to get one ready for dinner occasionally. Not my preferred activity. yep I did find it hard to eat.
ReplyDeleteThey are so cute! I love their names too.
ReplyDeleteWe get eggs from our neighbors and you are right they are the best, so tasty!
They look like they have a good life. Love fresh eggs - they taste so different to supermarket ones. Hope you had a lovely Easter.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the blog post at Amy's. I will pop over there next! I swear chickens have gotten much cuter these days. I remember my friends having chickens when I was growing up...and they were not so adorable. I have a co-worker who has lost a few chickens to a hawk. Good thing that coop is fox-proof!
ReplyDeleteWhat a charming tale of your chickens!! They look like they lead very nice lives and are happy not to pursue their "other" careers. Lucky you to have such delicious eggs to eat. Congrats on being the feature quilter with Amy!
ReplyDeleteAsk gbf about eggsplosions some time...
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely chickens! They look so sweet and full of personality.
ReplyDeleteOpperbacco! mi ero persa questo simpaticissimo post...
ReplyDeleteGran belle galline!
Ciao
Oh I am just a teensy bit jealous! I loved reading about them. What a cute pair.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! Chickens look like such fun and that's neat that they stay so close to each other. I love the coloration of both of them. I bet you really enjoy having the fresh eggs to cook with.
ReplyDeletei am so very happy to meet the Blue Mountain Chickens. I think that a Hen and Fox quilt is in order.
ReplyDeleteeveryone should have a few chooks..........
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me a comment. Your kind words encourage me to keep sharing my work and stories.
