Bargains, Bicycles and Fortune Cookies
but not a lot of sewing...
A dinner set of very collectible Johnsons of Australia ceramics. The 5 dinner plates and 6 side plates have a variety different flower prints, 4 cups with saucers and 6 bowls. Would you believe me if I told you the price on all of these as a set was $8!??! But then what if I told you there was a half price sale on bric a brac. Yes, this whole set of fabulous tableware was only $4!!!! In fact I'd call it a Super bargain!!! Don't they look great with my fabulous tablecloth that Gbf's parents gave me for my birthday last year.
Here's a photo for Suz of Patchwork and Play. She posted some great bicycle photos taken at the Tour Downunder, and I was telling her about a holiday in India I had 5 years ago where I did a bit of bike riding. This photo of me was taken around Hampi in Southern India.
Here's a photo from the same trip that always makes me laugh! It was taken on New Years Day in 2007. When I'm in India I like to wear a Salwar Kameez. They are so comfortable to travel in and as a western girl I received a lot less attention dressed as a local, especially in smaller towns.
This is a close up of my favourite outfit. Those flowers are block printed over the entire top and the purple strip at the bottom are the matching pants, also hand printed. What an electric combo!! I always got lovely compliments when I wore this.
From India to China.... It just so happens it's Chinese New Year today! Kung Hei Fat Choi!!! Happy New Year!!! 2012 is the year of the Dragon. Usually I'd be able to go over to my magic fabric cupboard and pull out an appropriate fabric but I don't have a single fabric with dragons! I do however have fortune cookie fabric.
One of the little fortunes say " The best is yet to come". That sounds good to me. I wish you all a very happy Year of the Dragon and lots of wonderful things to come!!
and there will be more sewing in the next post... :)

Thanks for the great photos of India! Don't you look cute on your bike and in the local traditional dress?! And look at the amazing Johnson Bros bargains! I don't think some people have worked out that these are future antiques!
ReplyDeleteHappy Chinese New Year to you. It is a year of good fortune and opportunity. I find it hard to believe that you dont have any dragons in your stash but the fortune cookies are so cute.
ReplyDeleteAm I going to date myself horribly if I say I remember these Johnson sets from my childhood? Do love the retro combo.
Totally agree the Salwar Kameez is so comfortable to wear.
I hope the year of the dragon will be full of good things. The dinner ware was indeed a great find. The photos of you in India look great, I love the outfits you have, they look super comfortable.
ReplyDeleteBargain on the crockery there! Also love the outfits from India, I keep meaning to go over to the south side where they have some wonderful Indian fabric shops, and pick some up for a project, but I only ever remember I want to go when i'm driving past at night and they're closed - doh!
ReplyDeleteHappy Chinese New Year to you!

ReplyDeleteLove your new dishes.....and what a bargain! Woohoo! And I can't get over how great that electric purple and green go together! Wow! But that totally looks like something you'd be quilting with, so it's not a surprise! lol
ReplyDeleteOh now you are finding good deals like I do at the thrift shops!!! I love those plates, I wouldn't of past them up either.

Good morning Rachael....I remember those Johnson plates...we used to have one of those sets many moons ago....Now I love that bicycle outfit and the others, especially those colours...Not much sewing going on here...I'm hoping to hit that beach today...Have a great day xoxo
ReplyDeleteLove the plates, what a great find.
ReplyDeleteAmazing colours in your Salwar Kameez, I can understand why you would get compliments.
This year is already starting out quite nicely for me, Kung Hei Fat Choi to you too.
(I can't believe you don't have any fabric with dragons on it!)
That is an amazing bargain! Love the holiday snaps. The green fabric is so lovely. Try and stay dry the next couple of days.
ReplyDeleteY'know it never occurred to me that my mum's "good" crockery was collectible. I had an 8 place setting of the apples and pears, only used about 4 times a year over 20 years, then not at all for 15 years, and gave them to a friend who loved them for two years, destroyed some of them and now has thrown them out. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteYou look lovely in your Indian outfit.
Oh I'm so jealous that you have traveled to India. It is on my life list. I loved the photo of you in the local garb.
ReplyDeleteSujata joked about taking a girl trip there, un, I'm not joking....
The fortune cookie fabric is wonderful, love sneaking those into projects.
xo
I remember the houses the dishes went with. Mostly early rentals. So nice a set has found a home to be loved in. We had dinner at DD's last night and ate off my first "GOOD" dinner set. Things don't change much. except how we look at them.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year
Kung Hei Fat Choi to you too Rachael, year of the Dragon....should be a good one! I loved the photos of you in India :-)
ReplyDeleteFabulous photos. Love that green and purple together.
ReplyDeleteYou look pretty in shalwaar Kameez!
ReplyDeleteThey are comfortable.. No denying there! That is quite a bargain for the tableware. Lucky you!
