Pockets Full Of Posies
Happy Blogger's Quilt Festival
I hope my regular followers don't mind seeing Pockets Full of Posies again. It's my favourite quilt at the moment so I couldn't resist showing it as part of Blogger's Quilt Festival.
Thanks to Amy of Amy's Creative Side for organising such a great event!! And a special welcome to those who have popped over from the festival.
The seed of the idea for this quilt was planted when I placed some denim pockets on my design wall.
I used paper cut outs of flowers to get a general idea of shapes for the flowers and leaves.
I used a mostly wool felt, with some cotton fabrics for the botanical pieces. Wool felt is a joy to use. It's so easy to just cut and sew. I sewed the flower and leaf edges down with similar coloured cotton and then added simple decorative stitches with perle 8 thread. I used perle cotton because it's what I have on hand, next time I make a quilt like this I'd like to use embroidery floss as well for a different texture.
Soon the flowers began to sprout
and grow
and bloom!
The quilting was a dense seed stitch with a crewel yarn. Partly for decorative purposes and partly because I think the dense quilting helps the pockets stand out against the backgroud more. It's hard to tell from the photos but there is subtle changes in the colour of the yarn around different parts of the quilt.
And here is the final garden. At 48 x 43 inches Pockets Full of Posies is a perfect size for a wall hanging. It does a great job of brightening up my lounge room. Who needs a pot plant when you can have a whole garden hanging on your wall. :)
Wishing you all a Happy Bloggers Festival. It's going to be a fun weekend of blog hopping and looking at wonderful quilts!!
Watch out for my other quilt entered in the festival in the Original Design Category.

ReplyDeleteNope, don't mind at all, this is a favourite of mine and when I was at the retreat denim quilts were a topic of conversation at one point. And I jumped in with my laptop to show this quilt as one way to use the pockets that are mostly thrown away although I have used them as outside pockets on the denim and lace cosmetic bags I make.
ReplyDeleteThere is no such thing as too much of a good thing. Bring on the flowers!!!!!!

This one is really cool! It's so interesting it could be used in a gardening magazine as well as a quilting one. I think people who love growing flowers would appreciate this especially.

ReplyDeleteA quilt similar to this is definitely on my bucket list. SO amazing. This reminds me so much of all the flowers my best friend's daughter used when she got married--all made from colored felt and embroidered, with lots of fun buttons. Have you every heard of Princess Lasertron? If not, you should definitely check her out. This is just gorgeous! I never get tired of looking at it. Ever.
