Super Star
Presenting the newly finished Super Star quilt!
Ta Da...!
I made this quilt as part of Tonya Ricucci's Unruly Liberated Amish Challenge.
This was the quilt I used as my inspiration.
And this is what I made. It's probably a bit more Gees Bend than Amish but that's fine with me. I love the way this quilt turned out. I did wonder about adding borders of some sort but in the end I felt it didn't need it.
I had lots of fun hand quilting big freehand wonky stitches in bright colours.
The quilt is all lines and triangles, I had to add just one little circle.
The backing was up from a stack of fabrics that I didn't really like, I'd put them aside to get rid of them but then I was hunting around for backing when I saw them sitting there and I thought "why not?". They would have to be the oddest combo ever but miraculously I love them together on the back of this quilt, I really do!!
Thanks to Tonya and the Unruly quilters for having this fun challenge! Check out the UnRuly Quilting blog for more wonky, liberated fun.
PS. The photos were taken at Hargraves Lookout, The Blue Mountains, Australia, over looking the Megalong Valley. What a view!!

ReplyDeleteFantastic quilt!! I am very happy with Amish meets Gee's bend to describe the look. Love the hand stitching, too. Great setting for the photos. Such a wonderful collection of fabrics both front and back.
ReplyDeleteStars!!! I love the colors of this and the stitching is great.. love the one little circle =)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of the Blue Mountains!!!
Wow it's fabulous Rachel. I love your interpretation of the Amish quilt. Your work is awesome and the photos are too.
ReplyDeleteGloriously unruly burst of colours colliding. Why is it that your quilts always make me smile.

ReplyDeleteStupendamente colorata, come tutte le tue creazioni!
Ciao
Another great quilt. The quilting looks perfect and that backing just makes me smile. I need to try piecing backs more often.

ReplyDeleteStunning quilt Rachael! I love the quilting and the view, what a beautiful background for a gorgeous quilt!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful interpretation! The backing is so cool hw it worked out and I lve that little circle you quilted!
ReplyDeleteHow about triple Ta-Da? Your quilt is a stunner - love the close-ups of the quilting and your photos are amazing too. Great setting.
ReplyDeleteSo bold and juicy! I love the handstitching too. x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! There is so much to look at and so much to notice. I love the circle that is hand quilted. You make me want to do some handquilting.
ReplyDeleteRachael, Your quilt is awesome! The pictures are great. In the last pic I thought "boy I hope a big gust of wind doesn't come along!"
ReplyDeleteThis is just so beautiful and inspired! And fearless! I love it!
ReplyDeleteSensational! I love the contrast of the black against the other strong colors, especially the red. Each corner has its own personality, and only one smaller star gives the quilt energy that the inspiration quilt doesn't have because of its symmetry. The back has that same kind of energy.
ReplyDeleteI'm speechless, Rachael! Well, almost. The quilt is amazing! My favorite detail is the quilting. Hard to pick one aspect though.
ReplyDeleteAnd the setting for your photo shoot is perfect. This quilt is bigger than life and deserves that spectacular view.
Awesome job!
Utterly utterly fabulous! I agree with Mary it is perfect! Love all the shapes and colours and the quilting is so amazing - that little circle was a great touch :)
ReplyDeleteI'm staggered, RD! It's absolutely gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteAnother stunning quilt, Rachael! I love the big stitch quilting, and the little circle, and the back is awesome, too! This is so bold and fun!
ReplyDeleteEvery time I see a great liberated quilt....I want to do it, too! But I'm not there, yet! I can do it with strings....but then I go back to my 'lined up seams, perfect points' mindset, and then they become just string blocks in a traditional quilt! Ugh! But I'm determined to get there one day! I just love this!
Just had to pop over from the UnRuly blog to see if you had additional photos - WOOT!!!
ReplyDeleteI think this quilt is truly awesome!
Super Star... SUPER QUILT! Everyone has already said what I think. So I'll add a wolf whistle!
ReplyDeleteWow! Wow! Wow! Love the whole thing, variety of blacks used, the star in the corner, all the scrappy bits, the big stitching and the fun back. LOVE IT!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful. I love the way you turned things on their head and had a plainish star on a scrappy background instead of the other way round. It's fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThe vote is in we all love it front back and it's a star. !!!!

ReplyDeleteFantastic quilt! You did a great interpretation and made it completely you. I use fabrics I wouldn't use on the front for my backings. It makes me feel thrifty.
ReplyDeleteAn amazing quilt and so glad you didn't add a border, this way the design explodes into the world as if it has no edges. Great colours too. While I appreciate the traditional patterns I love seeing original designs that break away from what has gone before. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me a comment. Your kind words encourage me to keep sharing my work and stories.
